To mark five years in Bucharest is to acknowledge that progress in this city does not move in a straight line. It moves in cycles, or hills and valleys as Romanian philosopher Lucian Blaga states. As IOMO Gallery reaches this half-decade milestone, they look back at a journey defined not by a singular upward climb, but by the organic and meaningful growth through time.
In the landscape of the Romanian soul, the ‘hill’ and the ‘valley’ are not merely geographic features, they are the important steps along the journey itself. For IOMO, the last five years have been a sequence of these. They have walked through the valleys. Those necessary periods of quietude, of inward reflection, and of the silent labor that happens when the lights are low. These were not gaps in their progress, but the very soil in which their values took root. And they have ascended the hills. Moments of communal electricity where the peaks of creative revelation and the joy of seeing a vision become fully realized.
By honoring this rhythm, they have sought to protect the essence of what they do. Titu Maiorescu speaks of the danger of importing the ‘outward shell’ of society, one of brittle falsities, while neglecting the vital, internal drivers. It is easy to build a ‘form’; a white cube, a digital presence, a social calendar. It is much harder to cultivate this essence of what a gallery stands for. Be it the connection between artist and audience, the integrity of a long-term dialogue, or the importance placed on championing the next generation of contemporary artists.
Over these five years, the gallery has become a body of its own. Its walls have absorbed the stories of every exhibition while its floors have recorded the footsteps of a growing community. This anniversary show is an invitation to read that record. It is an archive of the ‘body’ of the gallery, imbued with its history, while in parallel imagining a vision for its future.
IOMO gallery celebrates this milestone not as a destination, but as a confirmation of their direction. Learning that true progress is organic, not forced. And that the ability to remain true to their ethos through the shifting tides of the art world is in itself, progress.

IOMO Gallery are plăcerea de a prezenta expoziția de grup „Progress Is Not A Straight Line”, care reunește atât lucrări noi, cât și lucrări din colecția fondatorului galeriei, Florin Petrachi. Expoziția include lucrări semnate de Ángeles Agrela, Æmen Ededéen, Adrian Ghenie, Cathrin Hoffmann, Sea Hyun Lee, Jessie Makinson, Cristina de Miguel, Mie Olise Kjærgaard, Katherina Olschbaur, Gwen O’Neil, Emma Păvăloaia, Pedro Pedro, Bony Ramirez, Mircea Roman, Ecaterina Vrana și Nadia Waheed.
Deschisă publicului în perioada 12 martie – 18 aprilie 2026, expoziția marchează cinci ani de activitate și program artistic și are loc în spațiul galeriei din București, str. Băiculești 29.
A aniversa cinci ani în București înseamnă a accepta că progresul în acest oraș nu urmează o traiectorie liniară. El se desfășoară în cicluri, în „dealuri și văi”, așa cum observa Lucian Blaga. La acest prag simbolic de jumătate de deceniu, IOMO Gallery privește retrospectiv un parcurs definit nu de o ascensiune constantă, ci de o creștere organică, construită în timp, cu intenție.
În imaginarul românesc, dealurile și văile nu sunt simple forme de relief, ci etape esențiale ale devenirii. Pentru IOMO, ultimii cinci ani au fost o alternanță a acestor stări. Au traversat văile. Acele perioade necesare de liniște, de reflecție interioară, și de muncă tăcută care se întâmplă atunci când norii se adună. Aceste etape nu au reprezentat stagnări, ci însuși pământul în care valorile lor au prins rădăcini. Apoi au urcat dealurile. Momente de efervescență colectivă în care culmile revelației creative și bucuria de a avea o viziune au devenit pe deplin realitate.
Respectând acest ritm, au urmărit să protejeze esența a ceea ce fac. Titu Maiorescu avertiza asupra pericolului „formei fără fond”, cel de a adopta forma exterioară a unei societăți, o aparență fragilă, ignorând factorii interni esențiali. Este ușor a construi o “formă”: un white cube, o prezență digitală, un calendar de evenimente. Este mult mai dificil să cultivi esența a ceea ce reprezintă o galerie. Fie că este vorba despre legătura dintre artist și public, integritatea unui dialog pe termen lung sau importanța acordată sprijinirii noii generații de artiști contemporani.
În decursul acestor cinci ani, galeria a devenit un corp în sine. Pereții acesteia au absorbit poveștile fiecărei expoziții, în timp ce pardoseala a înregistrat pașii unei comunități în creștere. Expoziția aniversară este o invitație de a citi aceste înregistrări. Este o arhivă a “corpului” galeriei, îmbibată cu istoria ei, imaginând, totodată, o viziune pentru viitor.
IOMO Gallery celebrează acest moment nu ca pe o destinație, ci ca pe o confirmare a direcției asumate. Învățând că adevăratul progres este organic, nu impus. Și că abilitatea de a rămâne consecvenți față de propriul ethos, în mijlocul valurilor schimbătoare ale lumii artei, reprezintă, în sine, o formă de progres.
